We’re recruiting for the position of Power Engineer. This role is responsible to review, implement and advise on electrical power systems for telecommunications infrastructure, with a focus on colocation sites and future technology deployments or upgrades by customers. The role involves ensuring compliance with SANS 10142-1, applying risk-based engineering principles, and delivering reliable, safe, and cost-effective power upgrades to support network expansion and multi-operator sharing. You will be accountable for the review, approval, and design of power solutions to support customer network expansions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviewing, validating and providing consent for all co-location power application requests coming into sites
- Validating requests for technical and contractual feasibility against load capacity, redundancy and commercial contracts
- Undertaking comparative site conditions analysis to identify risks and constraints limiting co-location or network expansion
- Provisioning clearly documented consent with technical rationales justifying consent and directly communicating new site requirements to key stakeholder groups
- Utilising risk-based engineering principles for all new power installations and upgrade projects to identify, assess and mitigate risks prior to any power installation or upgrade activity
- Monitoring regulatory developments, electrical codes and compliance standards, best practice and emerging energy technologies to ensure future compliance of power designs
- Providing technical authority for electrical power systems safety audits, risk assessments and remediation plans
- Reviewing and analysing electrical survey reports to establish current system performance, load capacity, resiliency and site-specific risks
- Reviewing and evaluating system performance against resiliency, redundancy and availability requirements outlined in service level agreements (SLAs) and technical specifications
- Identifying any power supply unit, bottleneck, equipment malfunction or other compliance deficiencies and recommending a corrective approach
- Converting complex survey data into concise technical reports and recommendations for management decisions
- Collaborating with internal teams including engineering, operations, capital projects and network planning to ensure power upgrades align with the wider network rollout and modernisation frameworks
- Engaging with external contractors, electrical utilities and mobile network operator partners to ensure project delivery meets agreed technical standards, timelines and SLAs
- Keeping stakeholders appraised of project progress, risks and technical advice through regular updates and briefings
- Leveraging collaborative relationships with cross-functional stakeholders to address emerging issues and avoid unnecessary project delays
- Ensuring quality and compliance of electrical designs and upgrades
- Adhering to SANS 10142-1 and SLA obligations
- Ensuring accuracy of load calculations and upgrade recommendations
- Delivering project scopes, drawings and project or technical support in a timely manner
- Improving reliability, efficiency and sustainability of site power systems
- Designing and recommending upgrades to site power designs to meet co-location requirements and future technology releases including 5G
- Redesigning existing installations where possible and available after review for energy efficiency, operational resiliency and life cycle cost avoidance
- Investigating, analysing and implementing renewable and hybrid power options including solar, wind, battery storage and diesel hybrid systems to minimise carbon footprint and enhance sustainability
- Co-ordinating with capital projects and engineering design teams to produce detailed engineering drawings, schematics and system specifications
- Developing supporting technical Scope of Work documentation for all proposed upgrades that clearly outlines design requirements, compliance needs and implementation processes
- Including risk-based considerations in the Scope of Work documentation to ensure contractors are aware of critical risks and compliance oversight
- Providing value to budget estimates, capital planning and prioritisation exercises for upgrades to power infrastructure
- Ensuring Scope of Work documents are treated as enforceable documents for contractors, project managers and operations teams
- Designing, reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Maintaining solid knowledge of telecommunication systems and solutions including transformers, rectifier systems, batteries, standby generators, hybrid power systems, renewable energy systems and cooling systems
- Applying skills in load analysis, project costing and risk documentation
- Integrating energy efficiency and sustainability into system design
- Applying an analytical mindset with strong risk awareness
- Maintaining excellent attention to detail with a safety-first approach
- Communicating complex technical issues in a clear and simple manner to non-technical audiences
- Collaborating effectively across engineering, operations and commercial functions
- Demonstrating ownership mentality and results orientation while maintaining technical integrity and meeting commercial needs
- Adapting to ever-changing technologies and applying promising solutions amid increasing complexity
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, National Diploma Power Systems, or related
- At least 3 to 5 years’ experience in electrical power systems design, analysis, or auditing
- Telecom or ICT infrastructure power management experience highly desirable with knowledge on load analysis and trends
- Strong knowledge of SANS 10142-1 and electrical compliance frameworks
- Experience with risk-based engineering, electrical load analysis, and project scoping
- Proven track record in managing power upgrades for colocation and/or future network deployment such as 5G
